Abstract

Metabolic cost is an used as an indication of the stable and optimal walking conditions. This steady state metabolic rate is a measure of respiratory rate which in turn dependent on breath-by-breath O2 and CO2 measures. Due to high noise and variability in the respiratory rate determining the stable and steady metabolic rate is a reoccurring problem. The primary objective of the paper is determining the study-state metabolics in a short duration. This is achieved by improving on the Dual kalman state and parameter estimation method by determining the transition dynamics of the respiratory rate between each breath. Gaussian mixture model(GMM) prior based model is used to determine the transition dynamics and this dynamics is augmented in the dual estimation method.
